Project Info
The Kodiak Island Borough retained Prochaska & Associates to design and develop construction documents for a three-story diagnostic and treatment/patient care addition to their existing hospital. The resulting 62,000 square foot project provided an aesthetically appealing exterior wall and roof system that can withstand the severe Kodiak climate as well as a structural system to respond to the Island’s intense seismic zone. New departments within the addition included Emergency/Outpatient Services, Imaging, Surgery, Laboratory, Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, Obstetrics, Acute Nursing Unit, Intensive Care, Psychiatric Care, and Business Office. The facility included a total of 25 acute care beds, including four birthing suites and four psychiatric care beds. Patient rooms were elevated above the treetops to provide views of the bay and enhance the healing process.
Renovation of about 19,000 square feet of the existing facility followed as the final phase of construction. New exterior wall cladding on the existing hospital improved its appearance and matched the new addition, unifying the facility as a whole. Today the facility is titled Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center and is owned by the Kodiak Island Borough with operational management provided by Providence Health System. The Medical Center is staffed by a mix of primary care physicians, surgeons and specialists who provide family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics, radiology and general practice. A 19 bed extended care facility is also part of the campus.
